Steven Chanan, solo recital
Bay Area pianist Steven Chanan has been a sought-after accompanist and party pianist for decades and we are proud to host his long-awaited return to the solo piano stage after a 23-year absence. The program will feature works by the jazz/classical hybrid composer Nikolai Kapustin, rags by Scott Joplin and William Bolcom, and classical favorites by Bach, Chopin, Debussy and others, and will culminate with a rousing solo rendition of George Gershwin’s popular favorite Rhapsody in Blue.

STEVEN CHANAN
Steven Chanan is a true Bay Area native, having been born in San Francisco and living most of his life on the Peninsula, with stints in Chicago and the East Coast in his teenage years. At age 5, he started relentlessly begging his parents to take piano lessons for unknown reasons as neither parent could as much as hold a tune. They soon gave in and the rest is history.
Steven’s primary occupation has been as a math teacher. He was fortunate in his first teaching job that there was an opening for chorus accompanist, in which role he first learned the arts of accompanying and sight reading, and he has been a sought-after accompanist in the Bay Area ever since. During that first year of adulthood, he was also asked to perform at a party for the first time, which began his lifelong practice of building the repertoire of light, popular, entertaining pieces for which he is now known.
In 2001, Steven began serious piano studies once again under the guidance of Jerri Witt, culminating in the major 2003 solo recital which was the inspiration for his October 2026 solo recitals. From 2005-2007, Steven earned his Master of Piano Performance degree from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, studying with Betty Wu and Yoshi Nagai. Steven has been a faculty member at the Nueva School in Hillsborough and San Mateo since 2005, where in addition to teaching math he helps run the music program and accompanies in various capacities.
