1956 Steinway Model M
1956 Steinway Model M
This unique Steinway model M was presented in 1956 by Steinway & Sons as a gift to Clay Sherman (1914-1964), president of Sherman Clay & Co. in San Francisco, Steinway’s West Coast distributor. It was to express their appreciation for Mr. Sherman’s successful marketing and sales of Steinway pianos and has a 14K gold plaque affixed to the fallboard with the engraved signatures of all of the living Steinway men at the time, including Theodore E. Steinway, William R. Steinway, Henry Z. Steinway, Theodore D. Steinway, Charles G. Steinway, Frederick Steinway, and John H Steinway. After Clay Sherman’s passing in 1964 the piano remained with his wife, Louise Kerr Sherman (1915-2004) until she gifted the piano to her cardiologist in the final years of her life. We recently acquired the piano from the doctor. It survives in fine original condition with its original ebony finish and ivory keys. Size 5ft 7in. Serial number 350787.
