HANNAH MAYER
Hannah Mayer is a pianist and composer from El Cerrito. A 2024 graduate of Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore, MD, Hannah has had the honor of performing alongside notable musicians including Melissa Aldana, Sean Jones, Gary Thomas, Etienne Charles, Warren Wolf, Charenée Wade, Tim Green and Sharel Cassity. Hannah has played internationally in Shijiazhuang, China and São Paulo, Brazil, and has performed around the country at venues/festivals including Jazz at Lincoln Center, Small’s, Keystone Korner, the Jazz Showcase, BopStop, Yoshi’s, the Monterey Jazz Festival, the Tri-C Jazz Festival, and the Burlington Discover Jazz Festival. Hannah has been a member of Betty Carter’s Jazz Ahead (Kennedy Center), NYO Jazz (Carnegie Hall) and the SFJAZZ High School All-Stars, and was a YoungArts winner in jazz piano and jazz composition. Hannah’s debut album was released in 2023, paying tribute to the Broadway composer/lyricist Stephen Sondheim (“Hannah Mayer & Friends Play Sondheim”) which captures their passion for bridging improvised music and theatre. Outside of performing, Hannah enjoys accompanying ballet classes and teaching music to middle school students. Hannah is very excited to return to Piedmont Piano, having attended school for seven years across the street at Oakland School for the Arts!
AIDAN McCARTHY
Aidan McCarthy is a bassist and composer hailing from Oakland, California. An impassioned musician of eclectic interests, Aidan plays a wide range of musical styles on the acoustic and electric bass. Growing up amidst the vibrant musical landscape of the Bay Area, Aidan cut his teeth on the local scene, ultimately gaining admittance to nationally acclaimed jazz programs such as Carnegie Hall’s NYO Jazz Band and the Vail Summer Jazz Workshop while in high school. Following his time at Vail, Aidan had the distinct opportunity to spend an incredibly formative year studying with the great John Clayton, bassist, composer, and pedagogue. Aidan has performed professionally with jazz luminaries such as Jazzmeia Horn, Samara Joy, Miguel Zenon, Brian Lynch, Paquito D’Rivera, Ingrid Jensen, Etienne Charles, Sean Jones, Ulysses Owens Jr., Allison Miller, Melissa Aldana, Kemuel Roig, Faye Carol, etc. Internationally, Aidan has performed in Singapore, Japan, Ecuador, Switzerland, and Italy. Nationally, he has appeared at Birdland, Dizzy’s Club Cola, and The Festival of New Trumpet Music in New York City. Aidan recently finished an undergraduate degree in Media Scoring and Production at the University of Miami, with a focus on Jazz Bass Performance, with a minor in French Language Studies.
JAYLA HERNÁNDEZ
Jayla Hernández is a drummer, student and jazz enthusiast who embodies the sound of West Oakland soul. Having studied a wide range of Jazz eras and styles, she engages the strength of her ancestors opening audiences’ ears and hearts to the beautiful essence of Black music. She is well versed in a range of styles including Hiphop, R&B, Swing, Blues and Afro-Cuban. Jayla recently graduated from Oakland School for the Arts (2020), and is currently on full scholarship pursuing her bachelor’s degree in Jazz Studies at the prestigious San Francisco Conservatory of Music.
