Hannah Mayer and Leonardo Zurita, two close friends and musical collaborators, present a jazz piano duet concert with renditions of their favorite songs across genres as well as original music.

HANNAH MAYER
Hannah Mayer is a 21-year-old pianist and composer from El Cerrito and a recent graduate of the Peabody Institute in Baltimore, MD. Hannah has had the honor of performing alongside notable musicians including Chucho Valdes, Melissa Aldana, Etienne Charles, Warren Wolf, Charenée Wade, Tim Green and Sharel Cassity, and has played around the country at venues/festivals including Jazz at Lincoln Center, Small’s, Keystone Korner, the Jazz Showcase, BopStop, Yoshi’s, Herbst Theater, the Monterey Jazz Festival, and the Burlington Discover Jazz Festival. Hannah has been a member of Betty Carter’s Jazz Ahead (Kennedy Center), NYO Jazz (Carnegie Hall) and the SFJAZZ High School All-Stars, and was a YoungArts winner in jazz piano and jazz composition. Hannah’s debut album was released in November, which pays tribute to the Broadway composer/lyricist Stephen Sondheim (“Hannah Mayer & Friends Play Sondheim”) which captures their drive to bridge their love of improvised music and theatre. Hannah is very excited to return to Piedmont Piano, having attended school for seven years across the street at Oakland School for the Arts.

LEONARDO ZURITA
Leonardo Zurita, a 22-year-old jazz pianist, is steadily making his way in the contemporary jazz world. Having recently graduated from the Peabody Institute in Baltimore, Maryland, Leonardo has spent years refining his craft and developing his unique style. During his time at Peabody, Leonardo had the privilege of studying with distinguished mentors such as pianist Richard Johnson, vibraphonist Warren Wolf, and producer and beatmaker Wendel Patrick. These experiences provided him with a well-rounded education in jazz, blending traditional techniques with contemporary influences. The guidance of these mentors allowed Leonardo to delve deeply into the intricacies of jazz and cultivate a distinctive sound. Leonardo's influences include jazz legends like Thelonious Monk and Bud Powell, whose complex harmonies and innovative techniques have deeply shaped his musical approach. Additionally, contemporary artists such as Marc Cary and Mike Aaberg have inspired Leonardo's explorations into blending traditional and modern jazz elements. Since graduating, Leonardo has been performing at various local venues, bringing his passion for jazz to a wider audience. He approaches each performance as an opportunity to connect with listeners and share his love for the music. His dedication to continuous learning and growth as a musician keeps him grounded and focused on his artistic journey.
