Madeleine Zayas Quartet – Sudamericanto
This unique brand of Latin-American music will take the audience on a journey through traditions from South America and the Caribbean with a Brazilian jazz twist. Multi-faceted Puerto Rican vocalist/interpreter Madeleine Zayas and her quartet will play original compositions and innovative arrangements of carefully selected classics from the Latin American/Caribbean songbook, influenced by various Afro-Peruvian rhythms –Chilean cueca, Brazilian samba and maracatú, Argentinian sambas and chamamés, and more – tied together with rhythmic precision and intertwined with jazzy flavors.

MADELEINE ZAYAS
Born and raised in Puerto Rico, Madeleine Zayas is a Latin American singer/interpreter and choreographer based in Oakland. At age 15 she tasted professional singing with internationally acclaimed singer/songwriter Wilkins in her native Puerto Rico. She has performed in theaters and television in Puerto Rico, California and Nevada since 1985. Her musical career took root first as co-founder of Buena Trova Social Club with Brandon Vance in 2012 and soon after as the lead singer and co-artistic director of Madelina y Los Carpinteros and Duo Made y FeNa since 2014. Madeleine has shared stage with Cheo Feliciano, Inti Illimani, John Santos, and Holly Near. Her love of folk music is rooted in the jibaro traditions of the mountains from Puerto Rico and her eclectic repertoire is inspired by the Nueva Cancion/Nueva Trova tradition of entertaining and educating about latin american culture and pressing social issues. facebook.com/myloscarpinteros
MARCOS SILVA
Rio-born pianist, composer, arranger, producer and educator Marcos Silva performs worldwide. Nominated for two Grammys, he toured with many artists, including Paquito D’Rivera, Bud Shank, Claudio Roditi, Raul de Souza, Toninho Horta, Leny Andrade, Edu Lobo, Emilio Santiago, Dori Caymmi and many more. Marcos was musical director for Flora Purim and Airto Moreira for 24 years. He wrote arrangements for Dizzy Gillespie’s band and replaced Gil Evans as composer-arranger of Airto’s Spiritual Mass with a 63 piece orchestra in Germany. He is sought after as a producer of CDs, including three of his own.
For the past three decades, in addition to his work as an artist, arranger, and producer, Silva has poured his energy into spreading the gospel of Brazilian music, playing an enormous role in the San Francisco Bay Area’s emergence as a verdant outpost of Brazilian jazz. Known for her musical diversity, Michaelle has played percussion or drums with a wide range of artists: VNote Ensemble, ‘Chelle & Friends, Mark Levine, Tammy Hall, rhiannon, Yair Dalal, Barbara Higbie, Jami Sieber, Roger Glenn, Houston Pearson, Marcos Silva, Mimi Fox, Ann Savoy and Samba Rio.
