Pianist and composer Hannah Mayer returns with a stellar group of musicians: Nathan Nakadegawa-Lee (sax), Isaac Coyle (bass), and Jayla Hernández (drums). This performance will feature original compositions, reimagined music from the Broadway repertoire, and other favorites.

HANNAH MAYER
Hannah Mayer is a 20-year-old pianist and composer from El Cerrito, California. Hannah is currently a student at the Peabody Conservatory of Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland, studying with trumpet player Sean Jones. Outside of school, Hannah performs frequently around the Baltimore area at venues including the Keystone Korner, and leads a monthly concert series at An die Musik. Hannah graduated from Oakland School for the Arts in 2020. During high school, Hannah was a member of Carnegie Hall’s NYO Jazz and the SFJAZZ High School All-Stars, and was a YoungArts winner in jazz piano and jazz composition. Hannah enjoys musical theatre, and back in 2018 was the composer, music director, and accompanist for an original musical theatre adaptation of Ray Bradbury’s “All Summer in a Day,” performed at the Shotgun Players' Ashby Stage.
NATHAN NAKADEGAWA-LEE
Saxophonist, clarinetist, and composer Nathan Nakadegawa-Lee was born and raised in Oakland, CA. Nathan began studying music in elementary school with David Tidball, playing drums, clarinet, and eventually picking up saxophone. While attending Oakland Technical High School, Nathan developed his passion for music through artists such as Dexter Gordon, John Coltrane, The Beatles, Stevie Wonder, and Kendrick Lamar. He is equally indebted to his teachers Ted Allen, Helena Jack, Pete Cornell, and Tony Peebles. Nathan currently attends the New School of Jazz and Contemporary Music in New York City where he is pursuing a BFA in Jazz Performance and has studied with Melissa Aldana, Darius Jones, Tivon Pennicot, David Glasser, Jon Irabagon and Anat Cohen. While living in Oakland, Nathan taught at Oakland Summer Music, Oakland Public Conservatory, and Claremont Middle School, providing music education at no cost to Oakland middle schoolers. Nathan continues to compose, improvise, and perform in New York City and the Bay Area.
ISAAC COYLE
Bassist Isaac Coyle originally hails from El Cerrito. He began his musical studies on guitar at the age of 6, but switched to primarily playing bass at the age of 14. While in high school Isaac had the opportunity to study under many fantastic musicians such as Howard Wiley, Ben Wolfe, Jeff Chambers, and others. He was also a part of honor bands such as the Next Generation Jazz Orchestra and SF Jazz High School All-Stars, while continuing to gig frequently around the Bay Area. He graduated from El Cerrito High School in 2019 and currently attends the Berklee College of Music in Boston on a full tuition scholarship, studying with Terri Lynn Carrington, Neal Smith, Darren Barrett, and formerly with the late great Ralph Peterson.
JAYLA HERNÁNDEZ
Jayla Hernández, drummer, student and jazz enthusiast, embodies the sound of West Oakland Soul infused with the energy of young artists just like herself. Jayla has had influences from all different Jazz eras allowing her to embody the strength of her ancestors and use it to open up peoples soul to the beautiful essence of Black music. Jayla recently graduated from Oakland School for the Arts in 2020, and is currently pursuing her BM in Jazz Studies at San Francisco Conservatory of Music at the age of 20. While studying, Jayla has the pleasure of working with members from the SFJAZZ collective and many more known musicians. During her musical journey Jayla has had the pleasure of working with various artists through the years and plans to continue that journey while planning and exploring the world of Black American Music.
