Jovino Santos Neto Trio
Triangular Conversations

Returning to the Bay Area for his first live concert after the pandemic, Brazilian pianist and composer Jovino Santos Neto teams up with bassist Peter Barshay and drummer David Flores to present his Brazilian music in a piano trio format. The compositions by Jovino, Hermeto Pascoal, and Marcos Valle will serve as points of departure for inspired musical conversations among the three players. The music will range from the lyrical to the deep grooves this trio can generate. Each show is always unique.

PETER BARSHAY
A veteran bassist who has established a strong reputation over the years from his sideman work on both the New York City and San Francisco Bay Area jazz scenes, Peter Barshay has performed with such jazz luminaries as Kenny Barron, Freddie Hubbard, Sonny Stitt, Kenny Werner, Shirley Horn, Woody Shaw, Pharoah Sanders, Blue Mitchell, Tony Williams, Joe Henderson, Joe Lovano, Johnny Griffin, and Bobby McFerrin. Barshay’s numerous appearances at clubs and jazz festivals have taken him around the world, helping to establish his reputation as a solid, reliable bassist. Having soaked up a lifetime of sounds on both coasts -- everything from salsa and straight ahead to funk-fusion, avant garde and music derived from the Afro-Cuban and Brazilian traditions -- he brings a wealth of experience to the musical table.

DAVID FLORES
David Flores, a Bay Area drummer, began his musical journey at the ripe age of three, when he performed on a set of pots and pans in his family’s kitchen. David grew up steeped in music. As a child, he would tag along to his dad’s gigs and rehearsals; music was in his DNA. Since then, he has developed a 25+ year career as an educator, performer, and, above all, tireless student of his instrument. He now resides in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Versatility is one of David’s great strengths and leading inspirations. From Afro-Caribbean to Funk to Jazz, if it’s rhythmically oriented, David is among the best. His performance and studio careers include tours, gigs, and recordings with Donna Summer, Lauryn Hill, Paquito De Rivera, Zakir Hussain, Chester ‘CT’ Thompson, Larry Rosenthal, Margret Cho, Jerry Gonzales,  Larry Harlow, Steve Turre, Charlie Musselwhite, Barbra Dane, Armando Peraza, Orestes Vilato, Pete Escovedo, Bobbi Céspedes, Ellen Toscano, Greg Landau,  Mary Wilson, Rebecca Mauleon Santana, Mickey Hart, Melvin Seals, Marc Bamuthi-Joseph, Ska Cubano, Velvet Knights Drum and Bugle Corps, and The Oakland Symphony. dfloresdrums.com
