BILLY HARPER
Throughout Harper’s career, there has been a pattern of spiritual growth and innovation. “My feeling is that music should have a purpose. In the past, it always has been used for healing and uplifting and meditation. And that’s the way I see my music” said Harper, “I’ve had people come up after a program to tell me that they felt a spiritual healing from the music. When that happens, I feel we’re fulfilling what we’re supposed to do. If people are entertained, that’s ok too but I certainly see a purpose in my music beyond that.”
As a teacher and lecturer, Harper has taught at Livingston College, Rutgers University, and The New School of Jazz and Contemporary Music. He has also received a special grant from the New Jersey State Council for the Arts to teach improvisation at 15 different high schools. Awards and honors include three Music Composition Grants; two from the National Endowment of the Arts, and one from the Creative Arts Program. He also received the International Critics Award for Best Tenor Saxophone for two years consecutively.
DAVID WEISS
Moving jazz forward has been David Weiss’s modus operandi ever since he appeared on the scene in the late eighties when he established himself in New York by touring and/or recording with the likes of Freddie Hubbard, Charles Tolliver, Billy Harper, Bobby Hutcherson, Slide Hampton, James Moody, Tom Harrell, Louis Hayes, Muhal Richard Abrams, and Billy Hart, among many others.
In the past few years, Weiss formed a few bands, one of which is The Cookers. It features some of the most important musicians in jazz that are still living but are a bit unsung or neglected, giving them another showcase for their amazing compositional skills and outstanding improvisational prowess. The group features Billy Harper, Eddie Henderson, Donald Harrison, George Cables, Cecil McBee, and Billy Hart and features compositions by Harper, Cables, and McBee rearranged for the group by Weiss. GEORGE CABLES
When George Cables was going to school in New York City he used to walk the streets at night, taking in the cosmopolitan sights and sounds, mentally recording his encounters with “so many different kinds of people.” In his musical career as well, Cables has prowled sidestreets and main thoroughfares in relative anonymity, absorbing countless influences into his personal style.
Born in New York City on November 14, 1944, Cables was classically trained as a youth and when he started at the “Fame” worthy High School of Performing Arts, he admittedly “didn’t know anything about jazz.” But he was soon smitten with the potential for freedom of expression he heard in jazz.
He has performed and recorded with some of the greatest jazz musicians of our time, including: Joe Henderson, Roy Haynes, Max Roach, Art Blakey, Sonny Rollins, Freddie Hubbard, Woody Shaw, Sarah Vaughn, Tony Williams, Bobby Hutcherson and Dizzy Gillespie.
George Cables has emerged as a major voice in modern jazz. He is currenuy performing and recording as a soloist, with trio and larger ensembles, and as a clinician in college jazz programs. In addition to composing and arranging for his own albums, George Cables has contributed to recordings by Dexter Gordon, Art Pepper, Freddie Hubbard, Woody Shaw, Bobby Hutcherson and many others. HANS GLAWISCHNIG
Acoustic/ electric bassist and composer Hans Glawischnig grew up in Graz, Austria. His father, a pianist, leader of the free jazz group, The Neighbors, educator, and longtime chief conductor of the NDR big band in Hamburg, Germany, encouraged Hans to pursue a career in music. His American mother, having studied Art History, was an avid music fan, unrelenting supporter and emotional bedrock for Hans until her untimely passing in 2016.
Hans has performed with a wide variety of contemporary Jazz and Latin/Brazilian musicians including Chick Corea, Billy Childs, Bobby Watson, Maynard Ferguson, Ray Barretto, Donny McCaslin, David Sanchez, Paquito d’Rivera, Ravi Coltrane, The Manhattan Transfer, and many more. As a sideman, Hans has over 100 recordings to his credit and has released three critically acclaimed recordings as a leader, Common Ground (2003), Panorama (2008) and Jahira (2012).
Hans has been a member of the highly regarded Miguel Zenon Quartet since 2000. Currently Hans can also be seen touring the world with Manuel Valera and as a member of the Billy Childs Quartet. He is also an active educator, having conducted seminars and workshops in the USA, Austria, Mexico and Switzerland, as well as teaching privately in New York City and the San Francisco Bay Area. hansglawischnig.com
JAIMEO BROWN
Jaimeo Brown (pronounced jah-mayo) began his drum career at age 16 with his father bassist Dartanyan Brown and mother pianist and woodwind specialist, Marcia Miget, and drum teacher, Sly Randolph, himself a Bernard Purdie protégé from Harlem. In the last 20 years, he has worked with a range of musicians including Stevie Wonder, Carlos Santana, Q-Tip, Carl Craig, Bobby Hutcherson, Greg Osby, Joe Locke, David Murray, and several other New York based musicians. He gained extensive experience performing and educating various audiences around the world as an ambassador for the US State Department. In addition to onstage work, Jaimeo contributed program material for the Oscar and Grammy award winning documentary 'Twenty Feet From Stardom' and the PBS original production of Ralph Ellison's 'King of the Bingo Game.' As the Director of Transcending Arts Jaimeo is a passionate educator.
