Vocalist Sharmila G. Lash revisits her “Music for, by, and about Women” project with more friends and more music, including chamber pieces with vocal ensemble EQV, followed by a jazz set with pianist Anne Sajdera. They will present music by Melissa Dunphy, Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel, Moira Smiley, and others, including originals by Anne and Sharmila. A portion of ticket sales will be donated to Planned Parenthood Mar Monte.

$20 General Admission

EQV consists of colleagues culled from the best vocal talent in the Bay Area, collectively boasting credits with some of California’s finest vocal ensembles (Volti, LA Master Chorale, San Francisco Symphony, and Cappella SF): Yuhi Aizawa Combatti, Colby Smith, Kristina Blehm, Sharmila G. Lash, Will Betts, PJ Dennis, and Joel Chapman. Founded in 2017, they aim to share diverse and vibrant programs of a cappella music that span eras and genres, from the mad medieval master Gesualdo to the 20th century sensibilities of Hindemith and beyond.

Sharmila G. Lash is an active performer in both jazz and classical settings, is a private voice instructor, and works as a session singer, appearing on a number of motion picture soundtracks. She sings with the Los Angeles Master Chorale and has sung with San Francisco-based Volti, as well as the Los Angeles-based vocal jazz quartet True North. Sharmila began her music studies at a very young age, with piano lessons at age six and singing lessons at age eleven. She was a music student at the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts and continued on to study classical voice at the University of California, Santa Barbara, where she discovered her passion for jazz. She has shared the stage with artists such as Gustavo Dudamel, Esa-Pekka Salonen, Michael Tilson Thomas, Left Coast Chamber Ensemble, Kronos Quartet, Carmen Lundy, Don Shelton, and many others, including some of the top local jazz musicians in both Northern and Southern California. When she isn't traveling for gigs, she manages The Studios at Piedmont Piano Company. sharmilaguhalash.com

As a pianist, composer, bandleader and accompanist, Anne Sajdera is a creative force whose music encompasses an unusually far-flung array of traditions. With musical roots spanning the globe, she melds American and Brazilian jazz to her training in European classical music, creating an utterly personal sound that’s melodically verdant, harmonically sophisticated and rhythmically compelling. Her latest release, New Year (Bijuri Records 2018), features two young composer/instrumentalists from Prague, a special guest appearance by the renowned sax player Bob Mintzer, as well as some of the finest musicians from the San Francisco Bay Area. Produced by Ray Obiedo, it was chosen by Down Beat Magazine for the December 2018 Editor’s Picks list, and can be heard on jazz radio stations throughout the US. annesajdera.com
