Jan Nichols-Franz studied at the Chicago Conservatory of Music and received a full scholarship to study music at De Paul University. Her professional career began in Chicago performing locally with jazz trios and then as a featured night club act that travelled extensively throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico, and Asia. She toured with the Dick Clark Caravan of Stars as a back-up pianist and vocalist, and later performed as featured vocalist with Brazilian organist Walter Wanderly. After returning to California, she split her time teaching at Blue Bear Waltzes and working as a solo pianist and vocalist in the Bay Area's finest hotels. She currently also perform with her husband, trumpeter Jim Franz, and their band (managed through Island City Entertainment).

Her passion shifted from live performance to musical instruction, and in 2000 she began teaching pre-school music in San Francisco at Belevedere Montessori, before moving on in 2004 to private instruction in her home studio in Alameda, and at Piedmont Piano Company.

Jan utilizes a variety of teaching methods, tailoring her teaching style and the material to the needs of the individual student. Each year, she hosts a Recital, where all students perform, and the more advanced students have the opportunity to perform with professional musicians.

"I love working with young children, teenagers, and young-at-heart adults, and believe that sharing the joy of music is a path to enriching your life."
