Despite his age, Ben van Gelder (28) is emerging as an important new voice on New York’s groundbreaking improvised music scene. Peers and critics alike praise him for his unique sound and originality as a composer and improviser. He performs all around the world in various settings and formations. Rooted in the jazz tradition, he creates music that is informed by a multitude of contemporary influences resulting in a sound that is lyrical, at times orchestral, but above all current.
His newest album, Among Verticals, marks an important new episode in his career. Van Gelder’s artistic vision is realized by a group of extraordinary musicians who count as some of the most talented of their generation. The music is in part, the product of the Jazz Gallery’s prestigious residency commission and is inspired by the magnetizing Madame Kupka Dans Les Verticales (1911), a work by the abstract painter František Kupka. “The music as a whole is an ode to New York in many ways. It is a reflection of a decade spent in a city with unparalleled diversity and stimulus. To my mentors who remind me of the iconoclasts, to the people who offer the time and space necessary to create, to my fellow musicians and their ever-growing development. And to the people who listen. “ benvangelder.com
