Rebecca Kilgore
Too Marvelous For Words: The Great American Lyricists

The story of the Great American Songbook is one told by its lyricists. From Irving Berlin on up to Frank Loesser and beyond, their musical soliloquies and dialogues tell us about another time. Rebecca Kilgore's passion lies both with melodies and words from the 1920s-1960s, so you’ll hear both familiar and maybe not so familiar works. She will be joined by pianist Randy Porter and bassist John Wiitala.

Rebecca Kilgore is one of America's leading song stylists who finds particular delight in preserving and interpreting the music of the Great American Songbook. She regularly performs worldwide at jazz festivals, jazz parties, and on jazz cruises. She is a frequent guest on National Public Radio’s ‘Fresh Air’ with Terry Gross, has appeared on ‘A Prairie Home Companion’, and with Michael Feinstein at Carnegie Hall. She has performed across the globe, including venues in New York, Northern and Southern California, Michigan, New Jersey, Ohio, the UK, and St. Petersburg.

She is honored to have been inducted (in 2010) to the Oregon Music Hall of Fame and to the Jazz Society of Oregon’s Hall Of Fame, and to have been invited to perform at New York’s Mabel Mercer Cabaret Convention for three years at Town Hall and Lincoln Center. She was the guest of honor at the 2013 Roswell (New Mexico) Jazz Festival. Most recently she was honored to be named a Jazz Legend by the San Diego Jazz Party in February 2016. rebeccakilgore.com

Jazz pianist, composer, and arranger Randy Porter not only improvises sparkling melodies, but is a memorable ensemble player, as Charles McPherson, Freddie Hubbard, Art Farmer, Clifford Jordan, Benny Golson, and many others have told us. Lynn Darroch of The Oregonian calls him “a knowledgeable, inventive, and sophisticated player with a remarkable sense of time and gorgeous keyboard facility…”

Porter is also a special favorite of singers – Rebecca Kilgore, Diane Schuur, Karrin Allyson, and Madeline Eastman -- for his intuitive skill at creating spontaneous musical conversations on the bandstand. Based in Portland, Oregon, he has played jazz to appreciative audiences on the West Coast, in New York City, Greece, China, from B.B. King’s to the Kennedy Center. He’s recorded several CDs but his music might have reached its widest audience subliminally, in Apple’s iLife jingles. Randy has performed at jazz festivals, workshops as well as giving master classes. He is a Steinway Artist. randyporter.com

John Wiitala has worked with some of the greatest names in jazz, including Joe Henderson, Junior Cook, Charlie Rouse, James Moody, Bud Shank, and Cecil Payne. He has toured with Richie Cole, Arturo Sandoval, Shorty Rogers, Jessica Williams, Wesla Whitfield and Mike Greensill, and has played at jazz festivals around the world, including Monterey, North Sea, Montreux, Detriot, and JVC/Concord. His recording credits include work with Scott Hamilton, Jessica Williams, Mark Levine, as well as Anton Schwartz. John Wiitala is featured on Anton Schwartz’s CD, Holiday Time.
