La Voz de Tres is a trio featuring Chilean singer Natalia Bernal, 7-string guitarist Jason Ennis and pianist Mike Eckroth (John Scofield New Quartet). Their music blends the infectious rhythms and nuanced songwriting traditions of Latin America, original compositions and choice picks from the Great American Songbook in a surprising and refreshing improvisational texture. With impeccable musicianship and performance credits that include experiences with some of the biggest names in music (Scofield, Israel “Cachao” Lopez, Danilo Perez, Ruben Blades, Paquito D’Rivera, Charles Neville, etc), their music is captivating, dynamic, mysterious and joyous.
Their 2010 self-titled CD is a testament to their extensive command of the many styles of music they incorporate into their music. In addition to their Oakland performance, their 2013 West Coast tour includes dates in Mountain View, Sebastopol as well as Nevada and Arizona. Grupo Falso Baiano has been performing throughout California for ten years, bringing their unique and energetic mixture of Brazilian choro, samba and jazz to appreciative audiences from San Francisco to LA and everywhere in between. Their 2007 and 2010 releases Viajando: Choro e Jazz and Simplicidade: Live at Yoshi’s were praised by critics and fans and have been instrumental in introducing Brazilian choro music to American audiences. Their efforts to preserve, promote and extend the Brazilian choro tradition were featured on NPR, and their involvement in education through such organizations as Young Audiences and Youth in Arts landed them a feature role in a 2012 documentary about Young Audience’s programs in public schools.
In recent months the group has been composing original compositions and new repertoire and arrangements, which they will perform in addition to songs from their albums and more, with original members Brian Moran on 7 string guitar, mandolin and cavaquinho, Zack Pitt-Smith on reeds, and percussionist Ami Molinelli.
